Each in this series presents the entire content, page for page, of an original master bookwork which, up until now, has been too rare or prohibitively expensive for most to experience. Through a mix of classic and contemporary titles, this series spans the breadth of photographic practice as it has appeared on the printed page and allows further study into the creation and meanings of these great works of art.

Each in the Books on Books series contains; illustrations of every page in the original photobook being featured; a new essay by established writers on photography composed specially for this series; production notes about the creation of the original edition; biography and bibliography information about each artist.

The trade editions of each title are distributed by DAP / Distributed Art Publishers. She curated the DTW Gallery for nearly a decade at New York's Dance Theater Workshop giving many photographers their first one-person shows. Her artwork has been exhibited in galleries both in the US and abroad. Her work is represented in private collections and The Polaroid Collection. Unicorn Press will publish facsimiles of two of her journals annually, beginning in 2008 for the next five years.

Jeffrey Ladd (Creative Director) studied photography at the School of Visual Arts. He teaches photography at the International Center of Photography in New York. His photographs have been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Oklahoma City Musuem of Art, The International Center of Photography, The Soros Foundation's Open Society Institute, The Museum of the City of New York and the Howard Greenberg Gallery among others. His photographs are in the collections of The Brooklyn Museum of Art and The Museum of the City of New York. He splits his time between photographing and writing about photography. In 2007, he created 5B4 - Photography and Books, a website dedicated to discussing and reviewing photography and art-related publications.

Ed Grazda (Editorial Director) studied photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. He teaches photography at the Harvard University Summer School and is on the faculty of the International Center of Photography in New York. The subject of three monographs, his photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The New York Public Library; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; and others. He edited Thank You Robert Frank (Scalo) and worked on a number of books on Walker Evans: At Work, Havana 1933 and The Hungry Eye. Among his awards are grants by the National Endowment for the Arts in 1980 and 1986, and by the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1986. He has been a MacDowell Colony Fellow in 1994, 1996, 1999, 2001, and 2003.

Errata Editions Frequently Asked Questions

What does Errata mean?

Errata stems from the Latin word Erratum originating around 1580 which means: 1. an error in writing or printing 2. a statement of an error and its correction inserted, usually on a separate page or slip of paper, in a book or other publication; corrigendum.

What is the Books on Books series?

Errata Editions’ Books on Books series is an on-going publishing project dedicated to making rare and out-of-print photography books accessible to students and photobook enthusiasts. These are not reprints or facsimiles but complete studies of those originals.

What was your inspiration for producing the Books on Books series?

This Books on Books series was really inspired by the frustration in not being able to access the content of the great photobooks the medium has produced. We find it very odd and distressing that these bookworks are no longer available to students or new generations of photographers. The consequence is, part of the dialogue that could be taking place on these works has been stunted because of the inaccessibility of this material.

Why not just reprint the original book again?

What isn't common knowledge is that most of the books that we are going to feature in this series will never be reprinted in their original form again. That restriction comes from the artists themselves and their reluctance to keep revisiting and publishing old work. If you have ever wondered why these great books haven't been reprinted, that is often the case.

We also wanted these books to add scholarship that extends beyond the proper content for a facsimile or reprint. We want the ability to include essays that discuss the original book as an object with book production notes as well as biographies and bibliographies of each artist. We imagined these books also serving as introductions to the other works by the artists.

Also, the main objective is accessibility and affordability. Reprints tend to just go out-of-print and again become valuable and expensive. Steidl publishes wonderful reprints - some affordable, some not. But most tend to be in very limited editions 500 or 1000 and they just become collector's items themselves. To do a reprint of, for instance, the Atget book we featured as Books on Books #1, to mimic the printing, binding and paper etc would make that a couple hundred dollar object. That is not what we are about. Our books will be kept in print if they sell out. We are not making collector's items. That defeats the purpose.

Isn't there an issue of copyright?

The basic rule in approaching copyright issues is to believe someone out there holds the copyright and you'd better search out who that person is. We clear the rights to not only the photographic work but also for any texts that appeared in the original book. We also, when possible, approach the original publishers if they are still in business. Although this is often an unnecessary step as it is common in book contracts that the right to reproduce the same book again through a different publisher reverts back to the artist after the book has gone out-of-print for a specified period of time.

The rights issue was very daunting to us at first because we've had to clear rights for not just the photographs but for the writers too. So if there are three or four rights issues per book to clear, you are basically facing three chances for rejection. We can't do a full study of a book without including all of the original content.

Did any of the respective publishers put up any opposition?

We have found that people we approach about this project really like what we are trying to do and we have had little opposition at all. In fact, many have volunteered to help forward information or contacts to us to make this process easier.

In the case of the living photographers, did they see any problem
with their books being presented in this format, and thus possibly
jeopardizing a future reprinting?

When we first met Chris Killip we asked him if he would ever reprint In Flagrante or his first book Isle of Man and he said he wasn't interested. If he ever was tempted to, he mentioned he would change the book a great deal. He also thought, even though the work is still very important, it does have a context that made more sense being published in the late 1980's and closer to the time of the subject. When Chris saw what we planned to do he loved the way we were going to present the work and liked that, in a sense, it held the book within the original historical context it was published in.

This is a very common response. After seeing the results of our first four, many artists are even more open to us featuring their books. For them it solves the quandary of wanting the work to be available but not wanting to reprint a modern edition.

About "jeopardizing future reprints," the other interesting thing about this series is that our books would not compete at all with a reprint if someone did decide to do one. Our books are studies of that original work with essays and information that the original doesn't have. We have always saw this series as sitting alongside the originals as a kind of study guide - but a study guide that gives you a full sense of the original object. Again, most of these books will never be reprinted but if they were, we are no competition.

For example, we had a very odd experience doing a book signing in Paris with Sophie Ristelhueber for our study of her book Fait, many people in line had copies of the original book AND were buying ours anyway. We asked a few people why, if they had the original, were they buying our book too and some said they were buying ours for the essays and one or two replied that their original was too valuable for them to be fully comfortable looking at it for fear of risking damage. We found that amazing. Books you are afraid to look at.

How do you choose the books that appear in the series?

We have made a list of books we would like to feature in the series. Some are well known, obvious choices, and and others are more obscure. The books featured will be a mix of classic and contemporary that spans nationality and gender and the breadth of practice in the medium.

There’s a trade edition and a special edition for each title, can you explain the difference in the two?

We have printed 2000 copies of each book and if those sell out completely we will print a second edition. The idea is continued accessibility after all. Of those 2000, 250 copies are pulled from each run and cased-in with a different, more elegant cover that has a tip-on reproduction of the original book's cover. The regular trade edition has no tip-on reproduction but instead features a dustjacket. Both are actually almost the same price, it is just that the limited editions are sold only as four book sets through the Errata Editions website.

We have done these two versions simply out of a need to fund the next books in the series. Book publishing is notoriously hard to make any money back, and in fact, over 90% of the books published lose money. This is why many artists have offered limited editions with prints etc in order to recoup their production costs. We can't offer prints but we can offer a more elegant version of our books. Since Errata Editions distributes those limited editions sets, we can retain enough proceeds to put towards the production costs of the next in the series. That is why we are so grateful to people who purchase the limited edition set - they are directly supporting the series in a way that makes it possible for us to release new titles

Is there a finite number of books to be featured in this series?

If people respond and we can sustain this series I see it going on for a very long time. There are literally hundreds of potential books to do. My hope is that people or schools can now put together an interesting reference libraries of great books that won't be seen again. We learn things by good example. Photography is no different, its just that the examples have disappeared.

Will you publish books that aren't a part of the Books on Books series?

We want to publish new, original books of other artists that are outside of Books on Books series. In the meantime, we also have some interesting ideas for other scholarly books on photography that we would like to do for next year.

How are your books distributed?

D.A.P distributes our books in the United States.
